How to read a surf forecast: swell, period, wind, and tide
What the numbers on a surf forecast actually mean, why swell period matters more than wave height, and how wind and tide decide whether a session is worth the drive.
The four numbers that decide your session
Every forecast app shows the same core data, however differently they dress it up: swell height, swell period, swell direction, and wind. Tide sits alongside as a fifth. Learning to read them together is the difference between driving to the coast hopefully and driving there deliberately.
The trap is fixating on the first number. Height is the most prominent and the least informative on its own — a 1.5 m reading can mean a soft, rolling, perfectly surfable wave or a gutless closeout, depending entirely on the numbers next to it.
Swell period: the number beginners ignore and everyone else lives by
Period is the time in seconds between two passing waves, and it's a proxy for how much energy the swell carries. Short-period swell (roughly 6–9 seconds) is local wind chop: it was generated nearby, hasn't organized itself, and arrives weak and disorderly. Long-period swell (13 seconds and up) was generated by a distant storm, has sorted itself into clean lines on the way in, and carries real power.
This is why period beats height. A 1 m swell at 15 seconds will produce bigger, better, more ridable waves than a 2 m swell at 7 seconds — the long-period swell reaches deeper, feels the bottom sooner, and stands up properly. As a rough guide:
- 6–9 s: wind chop. Weak, disorganized, usually not worth a drive.
- 10–12 s: decent groundswell. Reliable, workable waves at most beach breaks.
- 13–16 s: real groundswell. Powerful, well-organized, and noticeably bigger on the face than the number suggests.
- 17 s+: long-distance swell. Serious energy — often much bigger than forecast at exposed spots.
One practical consequence: long-period swell breaks further out and arrives in more defined sets with longer lulls. Plan for more waiting and more paddling than the height alone implies.
Swell direction and why your spot ignores half of it
Direction tells you where the swell is coming from, and every spot only works within a window of directions. A beach facing southwest is shadowed from a northerly swell by the land itself — the forecast can show 2 m at 14 seconds and your spot stays flat.
This is the single most common reason a session disappoints despite good numbers. Learn the working window for two or three spots near you (locals and spot guides will tell you, or you learn it the slow way), and check direction before you get excited about height.
Wind: why offshore is the magic word
Wind decides the surface quality of whatever the swell delivers. Offshore wind blows from the land out to sea, holding the wave face up and grooming it smooth — it's what produces the clean, textured walls in every surf photo. Onshore wind blows from the sea toward land, pushing waves over early and turning the surface into mush.
Cross-shore sits between the two and usually leans messy. Strength matters as much as direction: light offshore is ideal, strong offshore can make takeoffs difficult by holding you back at the lip.
The practical upshot is the dawn habit. Wind is typically lightest in the early morning before thermal effects build, which is why experienced surfers are disproportionately in the water at sunrise — not for the aesthetics, but because the same swell is simply better at 6 a.m. than at 2 p.m.
Tide: the same spot, three different waves
Tide changes the depth of water over whatever the wave is breaking on, which changes how and where it breaks. The same sandbank can produce fat, sluggish waves at high tide and fast, hollow, closing-out waves at low tide — with a two-hour window in between where it's genuinely good.
There's no universal rule, because it depends on the bottom. Shallow reefs often need mid-to-high tide to be safe and surfable; many beach breaks work best on a pushing mid tide. What matters is learning your local spot's window and planning around it, rather than treating tide as an afterthought.
Reading a forecast end to end
Put together, a check takes about thirty seconds once the habit is built:
- Is the swell direction inside my spot's window? If no, stop — nothing else matters.
- What's the period? Under 10 seconds, temper expectations regardless of height.
- What's the height, interpreted through that period?
- What's the wind doing, and when is it lightest?
- Where's the tide during that wind window, and does it suit the spot?
Two more habits sharpen this fast: check the forecast the evening before and again in the morning (short-range updates are meaningfully more accurate), and look at a live cam or the water itself before committing. Forecasts model the ocean; they don't observe it.
Where forecasts stop being useful
Models are coarse. They don't know your specific sandbank, this week's rip, or the way one corner of the bay stays clean in a cross-wind. Two spots five hundred metres apart can score identical forecasts and deliver completely different sessions.
This is why a surf journal quietly outperforms any app over time. Logging what the forecast said next to what you actually found builds a personal correction layer no model has: at your spots, in your conditions, with your equipment. After a season of notes, you stop reading forecasts and start reading your own history.
